Department of Homeland Security

Mission Statement –

The Department of Homeland Security‘s Missions is to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This requires the dedication of more than 240,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector. Our duties are wide-ranging, and our goal is clear – keeping America safe.

Discussion –

Homeland Security is clearly a responsibility of the Federal Government, so the Department should be maintained under our proposal. With one exception – FEMA. FEMA is an example of the Federal Government taxing all citizens and then returning money to the States for State specific functions. To the extent that FEMA acts as a middleman for activities that the States could manage themselves, it should be closed.

While many may argue about the appropriate size and expense of the Department of Homeland Security, that discussion is well beyond the scope of this website.
